It all began in 1934 when Moosa Ismail Mia and his four sons purchased Farm Waterval for £16 000 from an insolvent estate and registered the development in the name of Witwatersrand Estates Limited.  The land was previously owned by the Gibson Brothers, who bred cattle and ran a successful stagecoach business between Pretoria and Johannesburg.

They built a religious training facility and a school for Indian and Black orphans on parts of the land. The Group Areas Act restricted the ownership of land by Indians, so they bypassed the Act by issuing 50 000 bearer shares, which could be controlled by any race.

Later the government began expropriating the land for development, with Eskom’s Megawatt Park and Buccleuch interchange built on what was once the farm.  When the decision was taken to develop the land, it had to be done within the framework of their religious requirement not to sell the land, but to sell on a 99-year leasehold basis.
